The Age of AI: Panel Discussion with Sam Altman

The Age of AI

OpenAI and BIFOLD Announce Research Partnership

The panel discussion "The Age of AI", held at Technische Universität Berlin on Februaray 7th, 2025, brought together leading experts to explore the evolving role of artificial intelligence in research and society. The event featured Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI), Nicole Büttner (Co-Founder and CEO of Merantix Momentum), Prof. Dr. Fatma Deniz (Vice President for Digitalization and Sustainability, TU Berlin), and Prof. Dr. Volker Markl (Co-Director of BIFOLD and Head of the Databases and Information Systems Group at TU Berlin).

The discussion covered a wide range of topics, including Open Science, Open Source, Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), data-efficient AI models, and foundation models. Key takeaway: AI is rapidly transforming research and scientific discovery.

New Research Partnership between OpenAI and BIFOLD

On the occasion of the jointly organized event BIFOLD and OpenAI announced the start of their research cooperation. In the upcoming weeks, BIFOLD scientists will receive credits to use with the newly released o3 mini model from OpenAI. The aim is to give the scientists involved a feeling for the relative structure and functionality of the model. Building on these findings, OpenAI and BIFOLD scientists will work together to develop promising research areas and topics, based on which a long-term joint research plan will be developed. The potential topics could be as detailed as specific applications in medicine or as comprehensive as a research program that deals with low-dimensional systems in solid state physics.

Volker Markl, Co-Director of BIFOLD: “We are very happy about the opportunity for a long-term research collaboration with OpenAI. We expect many exciting scientific results from this collaboration, such as more efficient algorithms, progress in explainable AI or in the security and robustness of this technology. Furthermore such collaborations can also help to promote the sustainable and responsible development of AI.”

Strong Interest in AI Research and Applications

The event saw an overwhelming level of interest, with 1200 guests filling the Audimax at TU Berlin and an additional 3000 people on the waiting list. Nearly 4000 people watched the Livestream. The panel discussion was a joint event by TU Berlin, OpenAI and BIFOLD.
