Workshop Recap: “The European AI Act: Developing a Technical Perspective”
How can AI research support the technical demands of the European AI Act?
On Friday, November 29, 2024, BIFOLD researchers Prof. Sebastian Schelter, Dennis Grinwald, and Dr. Thomas Schnake hosted an engaging workshop with interdisciplinary experts to explore the challenges and opportunities presented by the European AI Act. The aim was to better understand the Act's requirements and discuss how AI research can address these challenges, as well as the technological issues it raises.
The workshop featured distinguished keynote speakers, including Prof. Kristina Irion from the University of Amsterdam and Saskia Welsch from the AI Ethics Team at SAP. Both offered valuable insights into the European AI Act, outlining its requirements and their implications for practical applications.
During the workshop, participants shared their expertise on a range of topics, such as Explainable AI (XAI) and transparency, data compliance, AI in healthcare, the legal and ethical considerations surrounding AI, as well as privacy-preserving machine learning. In interdisciplinary sessions, attendees collaborated on pressing questions and generated new research ideas to address the judicial and ethical challenges posed by the AI Act, while also examining technological advancements and potential solutions to meet its demands.
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the workshop. We look forward to continuing these discussions and collaborations next year.
