BIFOLD researcher co-authors paper on next-generation Query Optimization at CIDR

Stefan Grafberger from the DEEM Lab at BIFOLD collaborated with Microsoft experts and presents the innovative research on streamlining data management systems at CIDR 2025 in Amsterdam.

The Conference on Innovative Data Systems Research (CIDR) takes place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from January 19-22, 2025. Among the contributions is a paper titled "Towards Query Optimizer as a Service (QOaaS) in a Unified LakeHouse Platform: Can One QO Rule Them All?" will be presented by a team of authors, including Stefan Grafberger, a Ph.D. student in the DEEM Lab at BIFOLD and TU Berlin.

The research, conducted during Grafberger's research internship at Microsoft's Gray Systems Lab in Redmond, explores how query optimization—a traditionally resource-intensive and complex process—can be revolutionized by transitioning to a service-based model. This shift, termed Query Optimizer as a Service (QOaaS), aims to lower costs and simplify the development of competitive data management systems by leveraging centralized optimization strategies.
"Query optimizers are fundamental to the performance of data systems, yet their development often requires many years and significant resources," Grafberger explains. "Our work proposes a unified, service-based approach to make advanced query optimization more accessible to emerging systems and organizations with limited budgets."
Co-authored with a team of 15 researchers, the study delves into the benefits and challenges of integrating QOaaS into platforms like Microsoft SQL Server, Fabric Data Warehouse, and Apache Spark.
The CIDR conference, is a premier venue for discussing innovative system architecture and transformative trends. To learn more about CIDR 2025 and explore the detailed conference agenda, visit CIDR 2025 website.
